Cilicia, Kelenderis, Stater, (ca. 425-400 B.C.); Av: Naked youth with whip in hand, seated on horse (as in side saddle) to left; Rw: Goat kneeling to left with head facing back, ΚΕΛΕ at top; SNG Cop. 76-78, SNG France 51; silver, 21.1 mm, 10.69 g; slightly off-center, nicely preserved.
The coin on offer was minted in the ancient city, Kelenderis, mentioned already in Babylonian texts. Apollodoros of Athens, the chronicler, claimed that it was founded by Sandokos of Syria. In the 8th century BC, Kelenderis was colonized by Greeks from the island of Samos. The city's greatest heyday was during the 5th-4th centuries BC, influenced by its favorable location, thanks to which the city avoided Persian invasions. Coins from Kelenderis are stylistically close to numismats produced in Larissa (a youth with a horse) and in the Macedonian city of Aigai (a motif with a goat).
