Eva Szaivert, Wolfgang Szaivert, David R. Sear – Greek Coin Catalog, Volume 2: Asia and Africa, Munich 1983, ISBN 3870451874
476 pages, approx. B5 format, hardcover with dust jacket; one of the classic catalogs of Greek coins, richly illustrated (approx. 3,500 photographs), with auction results. The flagship catalog of Greek coins by Wolfgang and Eva Szaivert, based on the English-language edition of the catalog by David R. Sear and Frank Purvey. The second volume covers coins from the Asian and African regions of the Greek world.
The book is based on David R. Sear titled “Greek Coins and Their Values,” which has been revised again by Frank Purvey, with additional illustrations (photographs) of coins from the British Museum and in a larger, more legible format. However, Wolfgang Szaivert, an assistant at the Numismatic Institute of the University of Vienna, together with his wife Eva Szaivert, a coin dealer, did not merely produce a simple translation, but in fact a completely new work, featuring an improved, clear system and numerous additions to David R. Sear’s catalog, effectively creating a new catalog of Greek coinage. Changes were made in the German edition; among other things, all coins from a given city or ethnic group were grouped together in one place without a strict division by historical periods, a new numbering system was added, and the illustrations were supplemented with coins actually available on the collectors’ market. This volume is rarely found on the market, in contrast to David R. Sear’s English-language catalog titled *Greek Coins and Their Values*. It is the fundamental and primary reference work on Greek numismatics for both novice and experienced collectors.
