Sedwick Frank - The Practical Book of Cobs. History. Identification. Shipwrecks. Values. Market, Maitland 1987, no ISBN
81 pages, softcover, format approx. 13.5 x 21 cm. Handbook devoted to Spanish colonial coins, the so-called "cob" (Spanish: cabo de barra) minted by hand mainly in silver, but also in gold and copper, produced for the Spanish colonies in Central and South America from 1536 to 1773 in the Old as well as in the New World during the so-called Golden Age of Piracy. Among other things, the book presents the history of this minting, provides a list of Spanish-New American mints and proof mints, discusses styles, types of coins and their legends, a description of coat of arms and special marks (which makes it easier to identify them), examples of forgeries and counterfeits, the market and prices of these coins (broken down by ruler, denomination and bullion) and even a map of the wrecks from which the coins came. The book also includes a bibliography and more than 100 photos of the coins by ruler and mint.
