Davis Norman - Greek Coins & Cities, London 1967, no ISBN.
221 pages, hardcover with wrapper, format approx. 21.5 x 26.5 cm, nicely preserved "Greek Coins & Cities" by Norman Davis, as the title indicates, is a book that provides an introduction to Greek numismatics in the context of the world that produced it. A simple and interesting analysis of the relationship between ancient Greek cities and their monetary system is presented. The book explores how Greek city-states used coins not only as currency, but also as a symbol of identity, culture and political power. Through detailed analysis, the author examines the artistic, historical and economic aspects of the Greek monetary system, providing insight into the societies that produced it. The book discusses the min origins of coins in the Western world, how they were made and weighed, their values as well as their issuance among Greek communities throughout the Mediterranean. It then presents in detail the coins of Greece, Macedonia and Thrace, Eastern Greece, Sicily, Great Greece (Magna Greacia) and portrait coins of the major rulers of the time. Each chapter has a map, photographs of the obverse and reverse of the coins, including some photographs enlarged to a full page (more than 220 photographs), a technical description of each coin, an explanation of its origin and the meaning of the figures and symbols on the coin, the location of the city or country where it was issued, and a brief description of its legend and history.
