Sedwick, Daniel Frank; Sedwick, Frank – *The Practical Book of Cobs, including an expanded guide to shipwrecks*, Winter Park 2007, 4th Edition, no ISBN
254 pages, softcover, dimensions approx. 13.5 x 21.5 cm. A handbook devoted to Spanish colonial coins, the so-called “cob” (Spanish: cabo de barra), which were hand-struck mainly in silver, but also in gold and copper, produced for the Spanish colonies in Central and South America from 1536 to 1773 in both the Old and New Worlds during the so-called Golden Age of Piracy. The book presents, among other things, the history of this coinage, provides a list of Spanish and New World mints as well as assay offices, discusses styles, types of coins, and their legends, descriptions of coats of arms and distinctive marks (facilitating their identification), examples of counterfeits and forgeries, the market and prices of these coins (broken down by ruler, denomination, and metal), and even a map of the shipwrecks from which the coins originate. The book also includes a bibliography and over 100 photographs of coins, organized by monarch and mint.
